The history of Fritz Hansen begins in 1872, where the enterprising cabinetmaker Fritz Hansen obtained his trade license in Copenhagen and started a furniture production company in Christianshavn – a central part of Copenhagen. Fritz and his son Christian initiated the high quality level, which has been the trademarks of Fritz Hansen’s products ever since. The good reputation was established early with prestigious orders such as Copenhagen City Hall, The University Library, The Supreme Court and Christiansborg.
Later in the 20th century Christian E. Hansen took over the business and continued to develop the company by experimenting with various new materials such as steel and steam bent wood. Something that later became the speciality of our company and the foundation for our most popular designs such as the Series 7™ and all of Arne Jacobsen‘s other stacking beautiful wooden chairs. Also the first Danish steel furniture ever produced was launched by Fritz Hansen and would later become the basis for Poul Kjærholm ‘s very exclusive and minimalistic designs. Kaare Klint, who among many is known as the father of Danish Modern Design initially produced many of his designs together with Fritz Hansen for example the world famous Church chair.
